New Hard Drive

I found a 200GB hard drive for less than 100 dollars that I will be able to afford, and still fix my car. I have to come up with the money for the car first, before I buy something this expensive.

It would be good to replace my two bad 100 GB with one 200GB Serial ATA hard drive. If I can by 4 more 250 GB PATAs, then I can have a computer that is near 1 TB: ~500 GB from the Mirroring RAID setup + ~400 GB is ~900 GB, plus a 100 GB primary hard drive for OS. For this to happen, I would need to buy a more powerful Power Supply that is around >600 Watts. If I do this, then I’ll most likely set it up as a File Server and load Linux up on it. It would probably need some streaming server on it also, because I don’t want to have to transfer to watch the videos, if it is going to be over a GB. It would take forever to transfer.

When I do set up the computer to be a file server, I am going to need another computer for gaming. My first computer can either be for general purpose, web surfing and homework. I’ll most likely spend the extra money to make the gaming PC into a TV/DVR. If I can find a form factor case that is small enough and cheap enough, then I may just build a DVR and save myself some money in the long run (as I’ll be able to build it from the ground up). I won’t be able to do all of this until I can find a job that pays me enough to fix my car, pay my bills, and still save up a little bit of money. If I can get a secured card, then I’ll most likely use that to pay for everything over time.

For now, I think it would be better to spend the little money and work my way up. In a few months from now, buying a 300 GB PATA would be as cheap as buying a 200GB now.
