<blockquote>Sadly, phpBB suffers from the “not developed here” paradigm. The push currently is for packages to include User integration and phpBB (Beta 1) doesn’t include those and is “locked in” to the user table. It may take several years before that is added and by then the user evolution might go from decentralized user authentication (like OpenID).</blockquote>
This, of course, still holds for Beta 2. Although Jacob is mostly right, he misses the point. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a user table. Once a user is authenticated, it’s OK to make him/her a member. The actual problem is the unfulfilled promise of the auth module system. Yes, Apache and LDAP modules are included in addition to the standard one (“DB”). However, these are all about usernames and passwords, not about identities! Needless to say, the “DB” module cannot be extended, only replaced. <a href="http://www.phpbb.cc/2006/10/07/into-phpbb/" title="My article" rel="nofollow">[...]</a>

Hmm, it appears I improperly stated something and added clarification.

I don't think it will take another 2 or 3 years for phpBB 3. It should be out within a year at the most. If not at the end of this year. The development team has made a lot of progress completing it and releasing Beta versions.

I still think other forum packages will overtake and obsolete phpBB.

Indeed, I was going to "rant" about the group permissions as that functionality is also required for a feature in the project that the lead wants for those to have a private forum for discussion within that group. Um, yeah, I stumbled upon the group functionality in FUDforum and thought it was "difficult" or at least more so than in phpBB. Hmm, interestly I never touched or played with or tried to find the group feature in SMF.

I figure that I only have time to dive into one forum package and once I start editing and learning that package, it is something I'm going to stay with.

<b>As for SMF</b>

SMF and FUDforum share similar traits, but Ilia's code base is more technical. The SMF frontend is rock solid and they do market that their code is "secure". If your demand is a good default template, then SMF would probably be a better choice, if not then just don't bother.

I run a large and not-so-large forum with FUDForum which I "upgraded" to from phpBB several months ago. I'm an evangelist, I'm warning you now.

One thing you may not have had the fortunate experience to encouter is the speedy response of Ilia Alshanetsky, the lead developer of FUDForum. If I run into a bug or problem with the software, he has, without fail, responded within 24 hours, often within 4 hours, with a fix. I ran into a lot of strange bugs with the phpBB importer because I was stuck on an older hacked-up version of the database.

Now, I am happily running two FUDForums. One of them I have integrated into my main website so that when you create an account on the site, you automatically get a FUDForum account.

As far as ease of use, getting used to the template system and the more detailed, but more confusing "group" permission is worth the time investment.

(I say this all, having not tried SMF. I made the decision to ditch phpBB when I was exploited and all my posts deleted (I had backups) -- my main interest was security and Ilia's credentials are rock solid in that department)
