No idea where I came up with that idea. Could had sworn I’ve seen it in the Automattic About page months ago. He is no longer there.
He is reputably one of the best WordPress core developers I’ve worked with while writing patches for the core. This is in my opinion, but if I had to rank them, Ryan would come second. Nothing against Mark and Matt Mullenweg. I need to look at more of their commits to find out if I like them or not.
You know, with all of the professional companies, like the one’s Peter and Mark are at, I think it would be interesting to see how far mine would go. I’ve been meaning to set it up. The only problem is that I just don’t like taking other people’s money for development work. “How much should I pay you?” says possible client. “Yeah, you know, I’ll most likely probably do it for free for now and then you can pay me what you think my work was worth.” I reply.
It is not a good business model. Leaves the client wondering about your abilities. I don’t think Mark or Peter have that problem, but maybe they do.
Client: “Why should I pay you to develop my solution?”
Peter: “I’m one of the core developers to WordPress, therefore I know a lot about WordPress and any bugs I find I can immediately fix and apply it to the core with your permission.”
Client: “Yeah, but that is a lot of money.”
Peter: “Having the best does sometimes come at a premium, but at least you know the kind of work I’ve done in the past and the kind of work I’ll do.”
Not sure what the company, Peter works at, charges or if he even works at a consultation job for WordPress. I’m sure I’ll probably have to explain why a client should have me besides some of the others.
Client: “Why should I pay you to develop my solution?”
Matt Mullenweg: “I’m Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress.”
Client: “Oh, well damn just name your price.”
Matt: “Excellent.” Marks off step four on his checklist to ruling the world.
