Using GMail for Email

I’m switching web hosts from Dreamhost to GoDaddy. I think it is temporary, but I’ll be saving close to about $10 by doing so and I should have faster responses to visitors. I want the new server to focus only on PHP and MySQL, so that performance isn’t hindered too much. I do think it will be by having the mysql server along with the Web server, but if it comes to it, then I can just buy a new server and use it as a mysql server. That would suck, so I hope I don’t have to.

I’m moving all of my email messages from 2005 to now over to Gmail, which offers 6 GB, IMAP, and better threading support. Once that is complete, I’m not going to be using mail on any host. It should be nice.

What isn’t nice is that I’ve been with Dreamhost since 2002 and I’m sorry to leave, but I’ve just grown up and can no longer stay on their servers. The cheaper price, more control is too good to pass up, so I’m going to take it. I will always remember fondly of Dreamhost as the first host I used that didn’t suck with great features.

Through the years, I’ve tried to switch every once in a while, but never found a host that matched what Dreamhost offers. Now that I have more knowledge managing Apache, PHP and MySQL, I no longer need any hand holding and seek to expand my development to actual money making ventures.

I’ll probably be finished with Dreamhost before the week is over and enjoy the new server. I’m almost already finished with transfer many of the low traffic sites and will hopefully be able to move the bigger sites soon.

  1. Why GoDaddy? I left them after hearing that they have a ridiculously heavy-handed approach to serving DMCA requests. :( (And a ridiculously slow time in correcting frivolous DMCA takedowns.)

  2. Cheap price mostly. I don’t know how much money I’ll make from my projects from ads and memberships, so I don’t want to go all out and buy a $150 a month server, when all I need is a $50 a month server. I’ll be saving $10 switching from Dreamhost and $100 from staying away from dedicated.

I don’t plan on staying with GoDaddy. I hope to move away within a year, but if it doesn’t work out, then at least I would have saved $120 for this year. Trying to find a good shared host is difficult, trying to find a good and cheap dedicated host is even harder.
