Update: Netflix, Hulu, ANN and Crunchy Roll appear to be great candidates. Not sure if Crunchy Roll is entirely legal, but they say they are or at least they say they support the original. Even if Crunchy Roll is not completely legal, ANN is, and hopefully more and better quality anime is shown on there.

Well, not to infringe on the trademark or pending trademark of Hulu.com. What I mean, is a site or service like Joost that has subtitled anime and not just dubbed. Well, I like dubbed anime, don’t get me wrong, but I’m fine with subtitled anime as well. Not everyone is, but there are at least enough people willing to spend hours recording, encoding, and adding subtitles to some of the best anime out there, it holds to reason that all of those people downloading the torrents now would rather watch the subtitled anime legally.

Limitations

There are limitations to this idea, which will probably limit how many shows would be available on this fictional service or web site. It is a dream, but not one that is currently viable in the real world markets. Or at least that is my opinion. It is quite possible that you could crowd-source a lot of it and cut down on the costs considerably.

License fees.

As with any show, if you want to distribute it, you need the rights to do so. Legally, all of the anime subtitled torrents are illegal and those who download and distribute the shows are breaking the law, unless they brought the rights to do so. I don’t think it is cheap to buy the rights, which is reasoning behind some anime shows not reaching the US, just not cost effective to both buy the rights and hire voice actors to dub over the dialogue.

For every show, let’s wager that it costs 30K USD, so if you wanted to license Basquash!, Chrome Shelled Regios, Naruto, Bleach, Asura Cryin’, 07 Ghost, BECK, Casshern SINS, and Chaos HEAD. It will cost 270K USD just to have the rights to distribute the shows. This is just an example, it may cost less and it may cost more, even a whole lot more. After you get the license you move on to the next expense.

Paying for the subtitles.

Granted, not everyone is overjoyed with reading and there are probably a lot who aren’t going to be impressed with having to read the dialogue. Well, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did well in the movies (dub was horrible). Of the 4000 to 10000 who will be interested in such a site, the subtitles will need to be done on the cheap or the license will need to be brought on the cheap.

One idea is to crowd source the subtitles. Have a group of people watch the raws and time the subtitles. There are already people doing that and if you hand some of the ad revenue that is left over, more who have the ability might be willing to continue. A huge “If” however, you could always hire one or two people on part-time basis to subtitle the shows and hire another to time them. In the beginning, you’re probably not going to get a lot anyway.

My guess is that at the worse, you are looking at hiring a translator at $30K to $60K.

Bandwidth.

Bandwidth and the player is going to get crazy. I want something as bad ass as Hulu, with all of the features it has. This venture would require a vast amount of servers and bandwidth on the scale of, well just take all of the bandwidth torrents save and apply that to the HD quality of the shows. If you have a show that is 700MB and 7000 people watching it, you used 4900 GBs of bandwidth. That is a serious ouch! Seriously, I think the encoding process of most sites seriously lower the size of the shows.

Advertisers.

The best option would probably be DVD and toy manufactures. Probably also want to throw in man products as well, razors, textbooks, etc. I will say that the money from advertisers will probably have to be around $5000 a month. If you get 30 of them, then you will at least pay for the licenses and perhaps the dedicated subtitle employee. Whether or not advertisers will be interested, is another problem.

Delay from airing in Japan and on the site.

It is unlikely that the schedule will be like that of any fansubber. If you think a week or two is bad, then it won’t even get close to the time it will take before the show can broadcast the series on the site. Granted, the TV studios are going to be concern with citizens of Japan and China accessing the site and taking revenue from the studios. I would solve that by geo-blocking the IPs of those in Japan. It will stop most probably, and better technology can probably be brought that will block those who are using proxies.

It would be great, if that could be used to get the people licensing the anime and the TV studios to allow for shorter periods of time before having the show available. My hope is that it will just less than a week after the broadcast in Japan, depending on how long it takes to subtitle the show. Hell, if at all possible, it might be possible to get the shows beforehand, subtitle them, and then have them up a day after the broadcast in Japan.

If the delay is too long, then it isn’t going to stop those who wish to get it sooner from doing what they are doing currently. With the license, it will probably cut off some fansubbers who might have otherwise done subtitles and those sites who respect licenses. Not all do and with the popular shows, you can bet that some fansubbers will continue doing so.

The Plus Side

Already have subtitled and dubbed anime.

There is already a large collection of existing anime out there that is both subtitled and dubbed as well. It should be cheaper to buy the rights to distribute those on the site to help supplement buying new rights to current anime already out there. It is completely possible to get distributors to sign on the idea, based on the assumption that if the viewers like what they see at least a percentage of them are going to want to buy the DVDs for home viewing for better quality and extra features.

Affiliate with anime distributor.

Pimp out the DVDs, if they exist and get as many people to buy them as possible. It won’t be any where near paying the full expense of such a site or service, but it should at least help here and there with the payments.

Might be more popular than what I think.

I don’t really like spending a lot of money and I’m naturally a pessimist. I believe that those who might be willing to buy DVDs and those who are wondering if it is worth buying the DVDs might appreciate watching the anime shows on their monitors, “Dude, that anime series is kick ass, I need to have it!”

Why I Like the Idea

The problem I have is that not every anime series in Japan is going to make it to the US and the ones that do, it will take a lot of money to buy them all. Of course, what I should say is not all of them are going to make it to the TV. So for those of else who don’t want to spend a tiny fortune buying up all of the awesome series, well it will cost $100 per series, so the above will cost at least $900, and that probably only includes the first 3 seasons of Naruto and Bleach.

I think it is a better model to allow advertisers to foot the bill in exchange for catching the eye of viewers. So for those who don’t have the money, seeing an advertisement for a razor that looks impressive might be better investment for that person than paying $90 for the DVD pack of 07 Ghost, when it comes out.

Also, it works for most people, since those who are interested will get to see the awesome new anime series when they come out (eventually, the first year or two will probably not have the current seasons). Those who wish to see the anime series can do so and legally. Advertisers hopefully make their money back, the site or service hopefully makes its money back, and those who enjoy anime get their fix as well.

Damn bitches blasted the Watchmen movie, Push, and The Spirit. I realize that Push isn’t based off of a comic, but if I hadn’t ignored the reviews, I probably would have missed out on some awesome action and storyline. Same goes for the Watchmen movie, the reviews were generally negative and I contemplated not watching the movie.

Well, it is their opinion, however wrong they are, and they are entitled to it. It is also my choice whether or not I listen to the reviews. Perhaps if I had listened to the reviews for Daredevil, I wouldn’t have wasted two hours of my life and $3.50 (I rented the movie). I thought, “Nah, those reviews are just hating.” I was wrong. I mean, I have been wrong a few times.

Lately, it seems as if the critics have been disillusioned with the movies that are based off of the comics. Perhaps it is because the movies are more hardcore than mainstream and they can’t wrap their tiny brains around the subtle jokes that are lost in translation for those who “Don’t get it.” I’m not saying Frank Miller is god (however, I will not say so while around my idol of Frank Miller, which happens to beside my idol of Alan Moore), but damn, The Spirit followed the same formula of Sin City.

Well, I have to agree that having the character talk directly to the audience is totally something a comic book would do, it is more funny when it is in the movies. Also, the action in comics have to be over the top or it is kind of hard to know the damage. You can’t tell me that two characters using props to beat each other down isn’t funny, because it is very funny. It would only be an error, if the director and writers did not mean for it to be funny and well, that will have to wait for the commentary on the DVD (if there is any).

Same thing with Push, critics were upset with the child actor, acting like an adult which, okay, I can understand how it might throw people off who then have to explain to their kids that, “No, you may not drink to increase your mental powers… What you see doesn’t matter in the real world, because in the real world she wasn’t actually drinking and if she was, she would have a much nastier headache.” I get that, I do, not because I have kids, because I don’t, but because it is an logical argument that parents have to deal with or so I’ve heard from parents giving me similar lines.

I very much enjoyed the movie, it fell right in line with many of the other anime, books, and movies that I enjoy. The story line was somewhat unique in its delivery of mixing and matching elements from other sources. I like that, and if you are into any amount of anime that follows the same formula, Naruto, Bleach (not so much, Bleach is more like Dragonball Z formula), Beet the Vandel Buster, Yugioh, Pokemon, etc. I can pretty much go on and on and no, I’m not saying all anime follows this pattern, just the ones that are popular and go on and on forever.

Pretty much 80% of the anime on Cartoon Network follow this pattern. A lot of manga follow this pattern as well. So I was kind of confused after watching Push, about what the critics were on. Yeah, it is repetitive, but what matters the most is the story, characters, and the like-ability of the overall story. Stories can be good, when the main character is all powerful and kicks everyone’s ass, but there is something to be said about a movie that takes a “weak” character and builds that person up. People like the underdog while undertaking all odds and beating them down. People can relate as much as they can with a fictional setting.

That works for the hardcore fans and those who are tuned to that market. However, for a movie to really take on new levels it has to reach the mainstream and that is difficult. Not every movie can be Spiderman and for every Spiderman, you have a Daredevil or Punisher (although, it was not a bad movie, it just didn’t appeal to that many people or enough people). I think what Marvel is doing with comic book characters is what they should have done from the start. Who else knows the characters better? Who else can give them the love and care they need? You don’t want some asshole executive taking the character and raping it under the pretense that they know what people want, because they’ll displease both the hardcore and the mainstream.

In as much of what I like about the Watchmen graphic novel is what was in the movie as well. Sure, they had to restructure a major plot line to make the movie work in the time it was given. I would hate to think the length of the movie, if they had added in the parts needed to make it work with the plot in the graphic novel. So reports that Alan Moore didn’t like it, so I was wearily of seeing it. After I’ve done so, I don’t see what the fuss is about. I’ll need to see what his objections to the movie are, I’ve not seen anything of what he has stated.

The mainstream will be slightly confused with several parts, so you do kind of have to read the graphic novel to understand what the hell is going on in the beginning and how the characters are. It is mentioned later with descriptions about the deaths of the characters in the beginning, but people are most likely not going to understand how it is relevant. The movie also explores parts of the message and themes that made the comic so great. Then again, you kind of need to have read the graphic novel to understand it better.

The movie brushes the surface of the themes that are in the comic and I like that the movie keeps everything mostly scientific. The comic goes into the supernatural, as well as scientific and I’d hate to have to watch another hour just for those parts to be explained.

The iconic parts are there and for that I’m happy. Those who have read the comic should be happy with the newspaper man trying to shield the young man who would read his stuff and never pay. The fat apprentice at the independent newspaper picking up the journal that holds all of the facts and the banter between the editor and the worker.

If that doesn’t get you, then the sex scene should. I could do without Dr. Manhattans penis, but the breasts totally make up for it and Dr. Manhattan is CG anyway.

Overall, I’m going to pick out the movies I’m interested in seeing based on the story and not some hack, excluding a few critics (hell, they are professionals and what do I know). So, the next movie I’m going to see are going to be Star Trek and Harry Potter. I envision that there will be a few more, but then again, there are also a few I’m going to rent.

There are many different theories on how paradoxes are prevented when you time travel and do something that you shouldn’t. I’ll go into two, because they are easier to explain and talk about and it appears that fantasy and sci-fi usually falls into one or the other, even if they don’t specifically mention it. These only apply when you go back in time and change something. If you just observe, then these rules don’t apply.

A new time line is created in which the original time line exists along with the new one, usually side by side. So if you went back to the future after changing the past, you would go to the future of the new timeline and the original would be locked from you. There are several exceptions, but if this was real, then they would be impractical in reality.

The old time line is destroyed and the new one is only time line that exist from that point on.

There are some television shows, movies, and books, where traveling back is not possible. So you can either go in the past or the future but not both. Usually, when this is in affect, you can only go into the past, since the future is undetermined and therefore there is no set point of reference to send the traveler to. It is kind of strange in which case, if you could travel the future, then that means that whatever was meant to happen would happen regardless of whether or not you went to the future.

I think that is the premise of this article about Heroes, the TV show appears to use #2. However, given the circumstances I could be wrong. It is unlikely that the original time lines exist after the past or present is changed. That said, recently, there is evidence of present events affecting the past, like when Hiro rips up the formula after going to the past.

Best way to do this is to set up a timeline.

Season 1

Original Timeline

Sylar kills the cheerleader and becomes invincible.

Explosion goes off in New York, killing almost everyone.

For number two, the candidates can be Sylar, the original guy with the powers, or Peter, which is who ends up doing it at the end of the season. Most likely, the way the events were going, it would had been the original guy, if Sylar hadn’t killed him or Sylar if he had. Sylar was already looking for him and with healing powers, it wouldn’t have killed him to go all out and explode.

What happens is that they save the cheerleader, thus Sylar doesn’t become invincible, but they ultimately save the light, which is the source of power. Therefore by saving the cheerleader, it starts a string of events which ultimately again leads to world destruction in Season 3.

That said, even if Sylar killed the cheerleader, if you go off the events in Season 3, then it still wouldn’t have killed her. It might have looked like she was dead, but Sylar himself said he couldn’t kill her.

Changed Timeline

Peter saves cheerleader, preventing Sylar from gaining the cheerleaders power.

Peter causes the explosion, but Nathan flies him off over the ocean preventing the explosion from destroying New York.

However, in knowing that the cheerleader was in trouble and trying to save her, Peter met a lot more heroes with powers that he could absorb and gain. Therefore, it couldn’t have been Peter that went off in the original timeline, because he wouldn’t have been involved. That said, there is no way he couldn’t have been involved, since the seers would had told him. This sort of creates a paradox, because the future that they’ve seen was never destined to be or it was one probably future that occurs on failure.

Therefore, I would have to be wrong, in order for them to foresee the future that would not be, there would have to of been several paths for which the future could go. A success condition and a failure one. The precedent for what future they would go is set in the present. If everything continued without any involvement from the characters, then the future they will go to will be the condition that they had left off. So the future that is possible has not happened, but could happen unless events were set in motion to prevent that future from happening.

Kind of makes you wonder what would then happen to the lady that Peter sent to the future and left her there. If he changed the future, then that future would not have happened, so when that timeline is destroyed, then she would be destroyed or is it so that he trapped her in a timeline for which he can no longer go back to. She is either no longer in existence or in an existence in a future that no longer will be in the current timeline. It is enough to make ones head hurt, which is why I think some fans are no overjoy with this whole time travel thing.

It would also explain why the characters in the future are trying so hard to find the pattern for which they can successfully change. However, they only know of their timeline and not of the other timeline, so if they make a change they have no idea what would come of it. They also couldn’t, because they’ll never have all of the facts or be at all of the places they need to be to solve the problem.

To ultimately solve their problem, they would have to spend their lifetime redoing every major change until they’ve found the right one and then stepping forward to the next event and finding the correct path for that. However, they have missing pieces. Peter doesn’t know what Hiro knows or what Sylar knows, Peter’s mom would be helpful also. The problem of course, is while Hiro and Peter might ultimately work together, it appears that their pride and what seems like conflicts in the future separate them. Something happens to both of them to where they become darker and change their personalities.

It might also be that the writers are introducing inconsistencies and paradoxes without knowing or planning well enough. A time travel show has to be done well and that is ultimately what Heroes is becoming. A time travel show. The element of time travel in a show can easily resolve past wrongs, but the key is that it can be easily done. The writers have made it to where the characters with the power to time travel do not do so often and without facing the consequences.

It is difficult to understand that in Season 3, Hiro witnessed his death from his friend’s hand with the power to throw lightning bolts. However, in a separate timeline to save Hiro, his friend instead had the power to enhance the ability of his friend. For that to happen, that timeline would of had to of had the cheerleader be captured by the thugs. It did not change the fact that the cheerleader still seeks to kill Peter. Her reasons must then be another event in the future that causes her to reject Peter. It also doesn’t make much sense because the main characters in that group die or unaccounted for. At the end of Season 3, the future that Peter was in, must still come to pass. The present cheerleader then becomes part of the company that seeks to kill Peter.

For the rest of Season 3, it appears that the focus will be the timeline that leads the government to hunt down humans with super powers. Sort of like the company, but they won’t make the distinction between the “good” guys and the bad guys, they will just round up everyone.

I think it would get really old if they kept revisiting the same events all of the time. I look forward to the next arc and whatever new information can be given of this new timeline.

I also think that you can’t really say, that if they went back and killed Sylar, that it would prevent everything, because it wouldn’t prevent Peter’s dad from doing his deeds. So you would have to kill both Sylar, and Peter’s dad and make sure they were really dead. The problem is that without the Heroes being properly motivated, it is unknown what will happen or what other event will result in the inaction on the part of the Heroes. There is also the dilemma with killing someone just, because their future has them doing terrible things. If properly controlled, Sylar wouldn’t have become a killer and I think that is what the show is alluding to. You don’t really need to kill Sylar, just help him control his impulses.

It is difficult to figure out for sure whether or not Heroes destroys the alternative time lines or if they exist beside the current one. I hope someone has the answer or they reveal it on the TV show. I suppose if Peter does go back into the future and save his girl that he left there, that would mean that alternative time lines do exist.

There was this one sequence, where they had the character Wendy dressing in her normal clothes and walking home. It was done in black and white and as single shots, kind of like photographs. There are few models who could match the beauty.

I think the fine women doesn’t hurt the show, and the nice comic book story lines makes the even better.

We hardly knew ye.

As one of the most bad ass characters on Dexter, it is a shame to see him die. Shame to see him go in such a way that left him helpless and without hope. I think the writers had us like him, only to feel for him in the end.

I’m going to miss the character. He’ll go down as one of the most bad ass characters in TV.

Wish the actor the best. Totally have to watch the third season. Dexter is awesome!

I don’t have the time right now to track down the name, but once I have the name I can probably find the track. As hard as I looked for the track in Gokusen, I’ll say it will be quite the journey. That is if Code Geass wasn’t so damn popular. It might actually be pretty easy to track down the name of it.

Eh, find the name might take a few days, but I’ll might be out of luck finding the track unless it is released in one of the OSTs. If it isn’t, then I’ll probably just give up, but they might release it later, so I’ll keep an eye out.

Found Song

The name of the song is Stories by Hitomi and is the second track on the Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch Original Soundtrack.

Damn good movie by the way. Funny as hell.

I think two of the main characters are homosexual. They only went through the motions of finding a girlfriend because that is what they thought was expected of them. The third character was straight and actually come out as heterosexual.

There are many hints, but I think you can look at it either way. Either the whole thing was actually to find a girlfriend and have sex or it was a way to find oneself and know what the other really thought. It just depends on what you want to believe.

I just think they are gay, from what I interpret from the movie.

Hints

The main character says he likes women, but never actively participated in finding a girlfriend. Even argues with his friend, that instead of going out and finding a girlfriend, he was out with him (his friend) the whole three years. I would interpret this as he was kind of angry that he made his choice to be with his friend but didn’t know how to tell him. The whole going out and trying to find a girl was just an excuse to not seem weird. Or it could just be that he thought they would actually be able to find girlfriends hanging out together.

The whole time the overweight character, kept making references of being gay. Including the really big clue where he drew cocks (damn good scene, laughed my ass off). He also didn’t like his friend talking about the girl that he liked. I thought, because he secretly wanted his friend for himself. The only problem with the whole theory is that he really wanted to date Jules and felt sad when he thought he screwed it up.

The following scene after that could just be that they were telling each other that they were really good friends and that they will miss each other for the following few years. Or it could be that they told each other that they really did love each other, like homosexual love.

The ending was totally gay, when they finally fall in love with each other and realize that the girls they went after were just an excuse and they really did love each other this whole time. Just my opinion. I’m glad it was left open, because I would rather think that they were just really, really awesome friends and that is all they would ever be.

I still bet that if they made a sequel, it would be years after they threw their girlfriends away and become lovers.

Damn Good Movie

It was touching at times and better than some older “teen” movies. The Director and writer really knows what moments are funny to people and what moments are touching and thoughtful.

I was impressed that I enjoyed the movie. It was well written and played. It also had great actors, which is part of the reason why it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. I like that it had the right amount of humor, romance, and action at times. The child and teen actors (and actresses) did extremely well. It could have been worse with lesser worthy actors.

The story was okay, but there are a few problems that I think I found. One was how did they get the material out of Nancy’s room when there wasn’t supposely a secret passage in her room. I think it might have been implied that there was, but it is difficult to believe that the buffoons could have gathered the material and left the room in less than a minute and without her hearing them no less. Well, with movie cuts what might have appeared a couple of seconds might have been longer. Whatever, seems kind of strange.

The rest of the movie was very intelligent, but you could kind of figure everything out before the final act. Whether that was intentional or not is always difficult.

I do hope they make a sequel and explore her world more. I haven’t read any of the books, but the movies seem like they would be enjoyable for both adults and children. More for children than adults.

Heroes in the last episode (Mon, April 30, 2007) defined two categories for Heroes. Those who are slated for extermination and those whose abilities can’t directly hurt anyone. My classification of the heroes takes two separate categories.

Abilities and Powers

It appears that the Heroes takes a lot of inspiration from the comic universe. Most notably, is Marvel’s X-Men, where each mutant has only one ability. Like X-Men and other comic heroes, some abilities are more powerful than others and some weaker abilities only need a little imagination to shine.

Abilities

In the Heroes universe, everyone who is “evolved” or “different” has only one ability, but there are a few exceptions. Whether it is controlling time, healing of yourself, healing of others, invisibility, or flying, most normal heroes can only control one special thing. This ability doesn’t have to be limited to one power and can have multiple powers associated to it.

There are those whose ability allow them to take another’s ability and control the powers like their own. Those that can do this are the most powerful in the Heroes universe.

Powers

Powers are different controls of a Heroes ability and limited to that ability. Normally, a person who can fly, can’t also shoot fireballs. However, it hasn’t yet been revealed all of what each Hero can do, if they can do anything else. The best example is that Hiro, whose ability is to control time, can stop time, slow time down, teleport, and go back and forth through time. The other example for a single power is that one guy can only fly and that is it.

Classification of Ability

I was thinking about it and I think you can place most Heroes within three and probably more categories based on what their ability is and how powerful that ability is compared to others like them. This would have to wait until either the official word has been given on categories of Heroes or more episodes establish categories, or the episodes establish categories in the episodes to define others.

Class C

These Heroes can only control their ability in limited capacity. They only have one power or limited to only one usage of their ability. Therefore their power is the same as their ability. Even among these, there can be some powerful players.

Claire, who can Heal herself after an attack or during an attack and it is extremely difficult to kill her. If she can learn martial arts or how to shoot a gun, she could become a extremely powerful of her own.

Nathan – Can Fly

“Claire’s Mom” – Control Fire (might be class B)

Linderman – Healing

D.L. – Can phase through matter (might be class B)

Matt Parkman – Read thoughts (might be class B)

Isaac Mendez – Paint the Future

…Many of the Heroes that Sylar killed in the show.

Class B

Heroes whose ability has expanded to include more than one power. These characters are slightly more powerful than Class C, because of the range of their powers. Not every Hero can freely control all of their powers, unless they have practiced a great deal.

It wouldn’t be much of a show if Hiro can just go back and right every wrong, can stop time and beat the bad guys up or just move out of danger. There have been a few cases that his ability wouldn’t let me stop something. Such as Jessica killing those men while they were in the storage room, or stopped him from kissing the waitress. There has been clues that Hiro does learn to control his ability and use his powers whenever he wants. I believe that him traveling back and forth through time will allow him to control that power to where he can go to where he needs to go without fail.

Hiro – Control Time

Jessica – Split Personality has strength and some intelligence.

Haitian – Affects the neural centers of the Brain. Powers include taking memories and blocking powers.

Class A (aka “Sylar”)

These Heroes transcend their ability and can absorb another Heroes ability. The Heroes that can do this are the most powerful of the series, since not only can they control their powers but they can control another’s, by expanding their powers, they can do more than even the Class B. Most Class C Heroes will have difficulty defeating Class A Heroes, depending on how many powers they were able to obtain.

Sylar

Peter

I have to get my hands on the Movies. Much like Battle Royale movies, I’ll probably will buy them, maybe. They seem to be interesting and condense the story into two stories.

Manga to Anime Comparisons

Format is Episode: Chapters (pages; notes).

1: 1 (up to page 44; was double issue).
2: 1-4 (ch. 1 pg 45 and 46, all of 2, parts of 3 and 4)
3: 3-5 (finishes up the parts from ch. 3 and 4 and all of ch 5)
4: 6-7
5: 8-?9? (not out yet)

It is interesting that each episode roughly uses about 2 chapters of manga. If they end the manga at chapter 108, then that would give them about 54 episodes. There is supposedly a 13th volume which tells of what happened after, but they may or may not use those chapters. One can assume then that there will be no more than 60 episodes.

The manga has a lot of monologue and hardly any action, so one can assume that they will keep to the 2 chapters per episode. It is possible they may add fillers, but that is unlikely given the storyline.
